Well, the global economy may be hurting but what about the interstellar economy? The great bandleader, Sun Ra, is fond (don’t tell me it should read “was fond” because Sun Ra is dead, because I am of the belief he simply left the planet) of the saying, “If you find earth boring, just the same old, same old, come on sign up with Outer Spaceways Incorporated!”.
Following a recent re-alignment with Saturn and its musical influences and heavy rotation of Sun Ra’s work on my jazz show last night, I spent most of an afternoon reading and exploring the Sun Ra article and releated links at Wikipedia. If you don’t know Sun Ra, you better set aside some time for some research into the man, the myth, the music the afrofuturism.

“In early 1971 Sun Ra was artist-in-residence at University of California, Berkeley, teaching a course called “The Black Man In the Cosmos”. Rather few students enrolled but the classes were often full of curious persons from the surrounding community. One half-hour of each class was devoted to a lecture (complete with handouts and homework assignments), the other half-hour to an Arkestra performance or Sun Ra keyboard solo.
