the pay, lousy
the work, barely tolerable
the food, bland at best
but the mountains, steep
the wilderness, endless
and the snow, deep.
so we stay
and are Alaskans

climbing skins and
skis
big tides, gale warnings and
king crab
heavy snow, fragile rock and
back-country bliss
family, drafty old home and
certainly
that is it
